Chapter 5-11
1) The reason why Pap had Huck locked up is because he doesn't approve of his life stile and what he is choosing to act like he doesn't respect him because he is not acting like a man or he is not acting like him.
3) He wouldn't mind being called a abolitionist because he wants slavery to stop because he doesn't want people to hurt him anymore. When slavery did happen I bet all slaves were abolitionist because they don't like seeing other people get hurt or themselves getting hurt. Huckle didn't want anyone hurt so if he got called that he wouldn't be ashamed he would be fine because he wants slavery to be over.
4) One thing is that he never wanted to do things that boys usually do and he started to do things that the girls did and he didn't like getting dirty. You can tell with a guy because he would hang with other guys and loves to get dirty.

Chapter 12-16
1)The story of King Solomon and his child is that the King didn't know who the child's mother is so he disided to let them appreciate the child. Both of the woman both loved the child so the king disided to cute the child in half. One of the woman didn't like that so she said "if I can't have him then nobody can" and the other woman told the king to just give the child to the her. The king knew she was the mother because a mother would sacrifice her child to make him safe.
2) When Jim and Huck were in the fog Jim said that they weren't even seperated and that it was all just a dream and the way that jim showed that he does care about huckleberry when jim said they were seperated he was just worried about huck and if he was okay.
3) Jim was very superstitious because as a slave he is not educated his superstitions are ways for him to explain how things happen
4)Huck was afriad to talk to a slave/Jim now that he is comfortible around him and he has grown on Jim and he doesn't regret talking to him at all.

Chapter 17-21
1) They are in a feud with the Sheherdsons. With a deceased daughter named Emmeline. Colonel Grangerford, the most powerful person in the family, he has the biggest estate. The childrens names are Bob, Tom, Charlotte, Sophia and Buck. Nobody knows how the feud started between the two family's. Sophia is in love Harney, one of the Shepardson boys. Buck and a 19 year old Grangerford got into a gun fight with Shepherdsons and they both end up dying and ends up scaring Huck away.
2) I think that the reason that Mark Twain wrote this into the book is because he want to show Farmers and Ranchers they both had to co-exist and then they went back to being rivals. This is the same way with Grangeford and Sheherdsons they had to co-exist in church then after they went back to being rivals.
3) Huck actually cared about the family that took him in and didn't want to go to that place where he found them again. He didn't want to face that grief this early. His friend died in front of him in the battle, and it really affected him. Huck really admired the family, whether it was the kind, gentle father or the fact that they are a genuine family. To see that the feud took more lives, it wasn't too easy for Huck to accept.
4) The King and Duke are two men that Huck came upon on one of his solo expeditions. Their clothes were battered and they were begging to be let onto the raft in order to get away from trouble. One man (the Duke) is 70 and bald, while the other (the King) was 30. They are both con men. The "King" sold paste that took off tartar from teeth, but it took more than that, and the locals were furious. The "Duke" use to run a temperance revival, but others found out that he drank. They both sought help from Huck Finn.
5) The Dukes plan was to make it look like they have actually captured Jim, and that means a way to "hold" him. This could make for some troubles as they might have to prove that they don't care for Jim, if any other ships come upon them. We can anticipate that others would try to capture Jim fore a reward and that would present possible dangers for the crew. It would also affect Huck's conscience because he cares for Jim and wouldn't want Jim to suffer.

Chapters 22-26
1) The line at the end of the handbill states "Ladies and children are not admitted". The handbill would get people into the play because more men would be open to doing things of their choice if their wives didn't have a say in their decision. That then gives the husbands and fathers a "night off" to have more freedom because their wives and kids can't come, which provides the husbands and fathers a good old night for the boys.
2a) Huck doesn't see the use in telling Jim about the fact that the King and Duke aren't telling the truth because Jim doesn't know a lot about Kings and Dukes in the first place, with that he would not understand if he did tell him the truth. Also he doesn't see the use in telling Jim because he doesn't know that the reason he is playing along with the King and Dukes story is to protect Jim from being caught and himself from getting more in trouble. Altogether, Huck avoids telling Jim the truth to keep them both protected.
2b) Huck and Jim had never met a King or a Duke ever before in their lives, so they wouldn't have known what one would look like in real life if they were to come across one. The two con-men would go through a lot to pull off that act, and they were good enough to convince Huck and Jim that they were truly a King and a prince.
3) The King and the Duke came up with this plan when they had found out that a man named Peter Wilks had died and left a fortune to his brothers that no one had ever met, known, or heard of. One apparently was around 30-35 while the other was deaf and supposedly dumb. The two con-men, being as greedy as they are, pretended to be the brothers and made Huck and Jim act as their servants. They wanted to sell the land and gain all of his money from the dead man and his brothers. Huck was ashamed about lying and stealing from the grieving family. The shame that he felt was probably from participating with the 2 men and their selfish plan.
4) Doctor Robinson knew that the King and Duke were both frauds because when the King gave his speech, his British accent was not good or believable. The Doctor said that it was the worst accent that he had ever hear. He knew that the King and Duke were con-men and were definitely not related to Peter Wilks, for they didn't know anything about Peter himself, who he was as a person or what they should know about the man especially since they were posing as Peter's brothers.
5) The King and the Duke consider leaving in the middle of the night with the $6,000 in gold, although they don't end up leaving in the middle of the night. Instead the King comes to think it would be a good idea to stay until the land as well as the slaves are sold, therefore they can get more money than they have got already.

Chapters 27-30
1) One of the reasons that people stayed up with the dead was to the protect their body from anything that would ruin the body and how it looked. Like insects and other rodents. They wanted to make sure that the body was kept safe. After a person died in this time , they had to bury the body the very next day because at that time there was apparently no possible way to preserve the body of rotting and decomposing, so they would watch over it. According to some traditions they would make sure the corpse was actually dead instead of the body sleeping or in a coma. They would also perform blessings upon the body or spirit to make their journey easier.
2) Huck has a very kind heart so he tells Mary Jane that the sold slaves will soon be reunited with their families in two weeks. He wanted to give her some hope because Huck keeps on seeing or hearing Mary having a breakdown of tears over the loss of her father and the sold slaves. He has a ton of empathy and always does what he can to help people.
3) What the real Harvey and William Wilks arrive the town is confused and angry because they know one pair of the brothers are frauds but they don't know which pair. So the town lawyer decides to give each pair of brothers a hand written test and compare the handwriting to the past letters that were sent to their late father. The test showed that the King and Duke were the frauds, but being the quick thinker that he is the King argues with the lawyer saying that the test is not accurate because Harvey's hand was broken. Then the real Harvey says that he knows of a tattoo on his dead brothers chest that no one has ever seen. Both the King and Harvey give detailed descriptions of the tattoo and the undertaker who dressed the dead man reveals the truth that he had no tattoo on his chest. So the town decides to go dig up body of the dead brother to see if he really had a tatoo or not. When they open the casket they find the bag of $6000 dollars that Huck had hid.

Chapters 31-35
1) Huck is praying about a lie he's been telling to himself to make him feel about taking Jim away from Miss Watson and helping him escape slavery. He was very upset and under a lot of distress because Jim was caught when reward posters were still up and was captured. The man who caught Jim took 40 dollars instead of the promised 200 and then went on up to the river. He was very upset about Jim being caught so he was trying to think of ways to get Jim out of slavery. So he was going to write Miss Watson a letter stating where Jim was, but he decided not to because it would put him in a bad spot because he would be helping a run away slave. He was also praying about what to do. He wanted to pry that he wouldn't do anymore bad things but he knew that he would in the future. So he couldn't lie about it.
2) He was writing a latter to Miss Watson letting her know where was Jim was being held. He decides to tear up that letter because he never wants her to know where Jim was. He wrote that letter when he was praying for forgiveness to God. He decided to take a chance of ending up in hell in order to save Jim from his captors. Huck has finally released that the society's view of how they treat slaves back then is not that way to act.
3) I think he was surprised that Tom would go against society's view on helping slaves without hesitation. But Tom Sawyer is all about doing things that society would not agree on. He created a "gang" to steal and kill people, that shows that he is a young boy who wants to have fun and not follow any rules that are set in place. I think it is good to see Tom being a good friend to Huck by helping him help Jim escape.
4) Huck is talking about the King and the Duke because he say them tared and feathered running from a huge mob in the town he was staying at. Even though they were liars and thieves he still fells bad of for them. Huck is saying that no matter what happens your conscience will always rule over the truth. I look at it saying something like if you know something is wrong but you feel that it's right you will do it even id it is not the right thing to do.
5) Tom want adventure, danger and excitement. That's why he want to do all these crazy ideas of how to recuse Jim. Tom wants to be as good as his heroes in the books. Every plan that Huck had Tom would say it is to simple and would not draw a lot of attention. They finally decided on a plan and Tom had to put some kind of crazy idea into the plan to make it more exciting.

Chapters 36-40
1) Tom wants the escape to be as dramatic and as a much of a game as possible. It's like a fantasy for him. He wants to have an adventure like the people in books do. He's trying to make Jim a real prisoner, and he's using impractical ideas. Huck's motivation is that he genuinely cares about Jim and what happens to him. He doesn't want him to be a slave again. He wants Jim to have his freedom. Huck is willing to commit a "sinful" act for Jim because they have a true friendship.
2) Huck and Tom were stealing stuff from Aunt Sally's house, they were taking spoons, candles and some bed sheets. Tom and Huck were building a rope ladder out of bed sheets to use in their plan to rescue Jim. Huck then says "We let on it took nine months to make it" That means that the rope ladder took so long to make it felt like nine months has passed by. In the future when they tell their story they are going to say that the whole plan and making the rope ladder took nine months to conduct. This makes it their adventure more intense and exciting than what it really was.
3) I think Tom is writing these letter so that Uncle Silas does not put an ad in the news paper saying that he has captured a runaway slave named Jim because he wants the reward money. Back before Jim was captured the King and Duke made a flyer saying that Jim was a runaway slave and there's a reward for his capture. They did that so that they can travel throughout the day and just say to people that they are the ones who have caught the runaway slave. Also Huck does not want Miss Watson to see the ad in the new paper and to have Jim go back into captivity.
4) This is satire because it pokes fun at all the great escapes of the day. The failed escape of Louis XVI being one of the escapes they use for reference. Tom having read many of the stories about the planned escape of King Louis decided to use some of the elements that he read in the book. When they finish the getting Jim out of the cabin and they are on the raft, he says " Boys, we done it elegant!--- 'deed we did. I wish we'd 'a' had the handling of Louis XVI, there wouldn't 'a' been no ' Son of Saint Louis, ascend to heaven' wrote down in his biography" Tom was saying that they should have been in charge of getting the King out of the castle because then he wouldn't have died.
5) Jim wanted to save Tom from the bullet that was lodged in his leg, and he wouldn't let the raft drift until tom had been seen by a doctor. I think Huck said this because the had just gotten Jim free and he was a runaway slave, and he wanted a doctor that would surely turn him in to save Tom. Jim said if the roles were reversed, Tom would do the same. It was almost like Jim thinking like a white man.

Chapter 41-End
1) Huck feels guilty because she thinks she lost Sid (Tom), and he feels bad knowing that he is still alive and that he helped the slave get away. He doesn't want to look her in the face because he's afraid that if he does, he will tell her everything they did and she will be mad. She expressed so much concern for him even, and the feeling of guilt is overpowering because he made her worry and caused some trouble to help Jim escape. Right after this, Huck and Sally stay up a little longer talking about "Sid" and if Huck thought he was lost of hurt. This shows that she truly has compassion for Huck and Tom, and when he is lying to this woman that has done so much to help and keep him safe.
2) Jim was so worried and guilty that tom had gotten shot while getting him free that he was willing to sacrifice his newly earned freedom to save Tom. Jim is a thoughtful and kind man. He would do anything to, save his friend who got him and saved him from slavery. The doctor found Tom too injured to be left alone while he gets help, so he says that he needs help, and outcomes Jim. When Jim heard that , he decided that he needed to help and would loose everything to help Tom out. Jim is faithful and the Doctor could tell he was exhausted from being worked too hard lately. Jim was a great 'nurse' to Tom, caring for him and helping no matter what even when it put his life at stake. He was a great man and helped everyone and was a pretty good slave.
3) We learn that Tom was so excited to tell his story about the adventure he and Huck has freeing Jim from captivaity. When he woke up in bed he began giving details about their plan to free Jim. We already know that Tom likes to do things that no one would ever think of just so that he can brag about his adventures that he has had and he finally got an amazing story to tell everyone.
4) I think that Huck is a very courageous, smart and caring person. He puts others before himself and act upon what he thinks is right and doesn't care about the beliefs that he was taught at a young age like to hate slaves. He worries about others and will do anything to protect his friends.
